MOCHARA featuring Maurice Dickson & Catherine Ashcroft

plus support from The Saggies

Northern Ireland's Maurice Dickson has been writing and performing his songs for almost 30 years. He has played in rock and blues bands around Belfast before forming his own band in 1976. Three years later he turned professional and continued to learn his trade in Europe and North Africa absorbing the cultures and the rhythms.

There is something deeply satisfying about listening to a musician who is obviously the master of his craft. It is even more satisfying to listen to one, like Maurice Dickson, who is not only a consummate musician but whose music is firmly rooted in something deeply personal. The ruggedly beautiful folk is as much a part of him as an arm or a leg, and just as vital. At times, you get the impression that it's a bit of a wrench for him to expose them to the harsh light of the outside world.

Catherine Ashcroft, although born in the North West of England, has deeper roots in the West of Ireland. She started playing Traditional Irish music on the whistle at an early age before moving on to the Uilleann Pipes in her mid teens. She regards her main influences as Paddy Keenan, Liam O'Flynn (Planxty) and Dervish. She pursued both instruments avidly and was sucessful in a number of notable Irish music competitions including the All Britain Fleadh.

Three years ago, Catherine met Maurice Dickson and recorded her first album at his studio in Cumbria. This led to them collaborating and Catherine guesting on Maurice's last two European tours and also forming "Mochara". In autumn 2010 they realeased a new CD - Mochara, "In Your Blood". The album and live performances consist of a blend of Irish Traditional tunes and original pieces written by Catherine and Maurice.

The evening started with a performance from local group "The Saggies" - with a slightly different line-up to their previous well received exciting performances at their last two Arran Folk Festival appearances, this cajun/bluegrass combo is constantly evolving. This concert, whilst featuring some familiar original members,  also included the addition of Nicola on Vocals,Whistle and Bodhran to add that extra sparkle to the set.

Below are two tracks from Mochara's "In Your Blood" Album as a taster of what they played on the night!

Mochara - "The Clare Jig"
